Sit quietly and visualize yourself smiling, or repeat an affirmation or positive mantra or prayer, as you steadily breathe in and out. If feelings of self-loathing or unworthiness arise, know that your thinking mind and its negativity script are at work. Keep at it, continuing to bring your thoughts back to a positive image or sound. Then, when you are ready, send your prayer of loving-kindness out toward others.

Meditation can open up possibilities for spiritual experiences, almost as if the subconscious mind is itself the gateway to the eternal dimension. This gateway is never wide open, and there usually aren’t any signs above it advising us where the road will lead at any given moment. Opening this gate isn’t merely a matter of finding a key or saying some magic word—it’s more like the idea that guided the ancient alchemists: the process of transforming and being transformed. Another way of looking at it is to say that the mind becomes a passage, and the person meditating turns into an individual who’s able to recognize the passage and move through it into deeper, more transcendent states.

Meditation strengthens our steadfastness with ourselves. Whatever arises—pain, boredom, sleepiness, wild thoughts or emotions—we learn to stay with it. We come to see that meditation isn’t about attaining some ideal state. It’s about being able to stay with ourselves, no matter what. Even longtime practitioners sometimes find themselves trying to use meditation as a way of escaping difficult emotions. But transformation comes only when we remember to move toward rather than away from our emotional distress. In meditation we learn to stay with the nonconceptual energy of the emotion, experience it fully, then leave it as it is, without adding fuel to the fire.

When we go too far, it is seldom in the right direction. From "Walk Softly and Carry a Big Book" - Book Love this quote, it has been so, so true in my life. Seems like either I am trying to see how far I can go or the addict is pushing my buttons to see what he can get away with. By the time I realized that there is a problem, or should I say, by the time I am willing to acknowledge that there is a problem, it is generally gone, way too far, and takes a lot of back peddling or an about face and I have to go back to the beginning. It generally means new boundaries, reinforce some old ones, detach in love, and PRAY, asking for help, for yourself and the addict in your life. As the old saying goes, "Give an inch, they will take a mile." It isn't always the addict, it is me that is giving the inch, if I start it, why wouldn't I expect the addict to walk through the space I provide. In other words, do what I tell others to do, stop enabling. If something doesn't work, doesn't mean it was wrong, it just didn't work or wasn't right for this situation. I just need to try something else, or give it up, and don't even go there, back off and let go. I can change my mind, but unless I follow it through with action, it isn't going to happen. I love and accept myself exactly as I am. I support myself, trust myself, and accept myself wherever I am. I can be within the love of my own heart. I place my hand over my heart and feel the love that is there. I know there is plenty of room for me to accept myself right here and now.
